The cars beep as they reverse. They beep when navigating tight turns. They even beep while avoiding each other in the company’s lot. Morning or night, weekdays or weekends, the noise doesn’t let up.
According to reports, Santa Monica residents have had enough. One neighbor, Darius Boorn, summed up the feeling: “I thought it was cool, and then those freaking noises started. And then I thought, ‘Oh no, this can’t be happening.’”
Local Tensions Hit a Breaking Point
The tension escalated when residents began staging blockades to stop Waymo’s cars from entering their charging facility. In some cases, people used traffic cones, parked cars, and even their own bodies to prevent the vehicles from entering. In response, Waymo made several calls to the police.

Despite Waymo’s outreach and adjustments, the constant noise continues to disturb locals. Boorn, still frustrated, dismissed the company’s efforts bluntly: “C’mon, it’s lipstick on a pig, baby.”

Santa Monica officials say they’re in contact with state agencies in hopes of addressing the issue. Their goal is to ensure technological progress doesn’t come at the expense of residents’ well-being.
Mayor Pro Tem Torosis made that clear, noting, “We need to make sure that as we have some of these new business practices coming into the city, while not stifling innovation, that we’re putting the needs of our residents here in front.”
Waymo, for its part, released a statement reiterating its commitment to community dialogue. A spokesperson said the company remains “in ongoing conversation with the City’s Department of Transportation” and plans to continue adjusting its practices to serve neighborhoods better.
